Description

Since this was so detailed as a line art. I deliberately didn't want to get to elaborate on the shading lest you lose the effect of the contrast between the light and shadow. Even though there is hard contrast between the light and the shading, the use of light colors for the shading just made this soft in appearance. I am pleased with how this turned out.

As for the character, many who watched as I drew her mistook her for a man, I suppose that would be the case since she is drawn in heavy armor and wields a heavy hammer. (It is not Mjolnir, Thor's hammer, since Mjolnir is supposed to have a short handle according to lore)

No, I wanted to represent a goddess with something that represented both strength and creation. I contemplated a sword but blades bring death, which would be contrary as to what I wanted to portray. The heavy armor can be considered a representation of burden but also that of protection.

Rarely do I see a piece that comes across dA that makes me stop and just take in its simple beauty. The soft lighting and radiance the piece displays takes my breath away and the little details, from expression, to choice of garb, and even armament serve to evoke the mind to conjure up the reality of the being. The colors, as they shift across the spectrum from the bright yellows, and warm oranges, into the serene blues and deep purples create a feeling of duality within, for Creation is not merely making of items that are good alone, but making the good, and the bad together.

The pose is exactly what captures the moment perfectly. Not stiff and rigid, but not too relaxed, either. In this moment of preparedness she accepts her burden, but there is no sadness in what facial features we do see. There is a calm acceptance that speaks to me and says "This is what I have always done, and this is what I will always do." The hammer, an implement man has used to make many wonders, fits as a weapon of Creation. From tools of war, to buildings, and even the wonders of the world, the hammer has been integral in making.

I fell in love with the simple, but yet deeply elegant, beauty of this work the moment I saw it. It captured the artist's view perfectly.
